08 Growin' up

Notes:
Nearly every gig on the Darkness Tour was a sellout or a virtual sellout. There were only three or four exceptions and this show was the most glaring one - with just 3,000 of the 6,500 tickets sold. A brief review, which incorporates an interesting post-concert backstage chat with Bruce, mentions “Growin’ Up” (with its ‘Let It Rock’ story) as having been performed. No other titles are articulated. Bruce was on a guaranteed performance fee but mentions in the interview that he is going to compensate the show’s promoter for the financial loss sustained. Setlists and/or audio long-circulating and alleged to be from this gig are in fact slight permutations of the audio from the 25/11/78 show in St Louis. Consequently Kalamazoo’s seemingly strange setlist (for the mid-tour period) is incorrect and “The Ties That Bind” did NOT make its world debut at this August 7th show

Notes:
CANCELLED concert (probably prior to any public announcement of its booking), never re-scheduled. In Aug 1978 Ryerson University was known as Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and this gig, noted in some in-house CBS Tour Itinerary documentation, was planned for the school’s 1,200-seat Ryerson Theatre. Reason for the cancellation is unknown.

Notes:
Above songs are from attendee recollections of the show made from a BB reader, and also that during a great version of ROSALITA..Bruce was acting up running around etc.then he runs to the mic and announces "someone stop me....before I hurt myself"....then he collapses to the stage ....Clarence rushes over to play sax ofer him and a few girls rush the stage and huddle around him til he revives and they are wisked away and then he continues again. GROWIN' UP features a mid song story variation of being chased by armed forces of all types etc. and BACKSTREETS features Bruce referencing the singer Stevie Lawrence and he sang a Lawrence song "Little Blue Eyes"....before going back to "....hiding in the backstreets" Thanks to Andy for all these recollections. The back of the stage area of this 8,700-seat venue was curtained off. Consequently the seating was reduced to 6,000 for this show. Thanks to Neil ('I remember it like it was yesterday' ) for filling up the missing songs in the setlist.

Notes:
I'm watching the video of this concert. I cannot help writing some lines on it. I don't want to encourage the buying of unauthorized material, but if you already have all the official video items, you really got to have this. Performance like 'Sandy' and 'Prove it all night' as captured in this film make you understand how great he is, just in case there was any doubt left. All the show was great, but Sandy is above all… and this show was not better than all the other '78 shows…. I'm just speaking of this because I just have this one…. This reminds me of an old phrase I saw written on some horrible shirt : "People can be divided in two halves; the ones who love him, and the ones who never saw him playing live…" Back here… the video is goin' on…. I cannot write nothing on Growin'up and Backstreets. The 'sad eyes-drive all night-pretty flamingo' interlude in backstreets is simply one of the best things you may ever watch and listen to…. Also Because the Night is terrific…

Racing in the streets added but not present in any source Gary Busey guests again on Rave On. "This was a very memorable show for me as I was sick for the first half, but by the 2nd set I was feeling great. I felt good enough to get down to the first row to see the show. towards the end of the show ,when the band was jamming near the end of born to run a few people jumped onstage and were quickly escorted off. I thought what the hay, let me give it a shot and I jumped onstage, Bruce was right in front of me, I stuck my hand out he took it and started dancing around with me. it was amazing! at the very end of the song he still was dancing with me, we went to the front of the stage, to the microphone, Bruce held my hand in the air, screamed 1,2,3,4 into the mike and put my hand down as the crowd went wild. The greatest experience of my concert life. I've been to over 300 concerts. then I was kindly escorted offstage as Bruce watched me seemingly to make sure I wasn't roughed up or anything.

Notes:
The setlist above is partial but near complete, with just 3 or 4 titles missing. Culled from reports in the Pittsburgh papers and attendee recollections. One Pittsburgh newspaper mentions “Something In Night,” returning for the first time in a couple of months. The Pittsburgh Press mentions a stunning piano solo rendition of “Lost In The Flood” that Bruce plays as a special request – and he utilizes his lyrics notebook to ensure he doesn’t mess it up. Partial setlist compiled from newspaper review of the concert (Pittsburgh Press) and the (hazy) memory of a fan present. Thanks to Michael for the info. Lost In The Flood was apparently played solo on request made by a note slipped backstage.

Notes:
Complete setlist is not known but five songs are mentioned as having been played in a review of the show in the Cleveland Plain dealer. “Lost In The Flood” makes another rare appearance in its piano-solo incarnation. One reader present comments "I can tell you he opened with Elvis's Good Rockin' Tonight, and played almost the same show as the Detroit show right after -- Badlands, Spirits in the Night, Streets of Fire, Darkness on the Edge of Town, the "life story" version of Growin' Up, et al. He did that incredible solo piano version of Lost in the Flood, a killer Born to Run. He also played 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) and encored with Runaround Sue with all of the house lights on. What a night!" Thanks to Mark Kuhar for the report (through Brucebase), and thanks to Alan and Wendy Golski. Info is also from the Cleveland Plain-Dealer review of the show.

Notes:
With Southside Johnny. A fan present writes, "We were at the Agora on 8/30 or 31/1978. We had tried desperately to get tickets for Bruce that night at the Coleseum but it got sold out. The Agora Gig was actually a Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes Gig that started about 3 Hours late because, as Southside stated, they had to wait for their lead guitarist (Miami Steve) to get done with another gig across town. Bruce joined the band in the second set and they Rocked into the wee hours of the night neither the band nor the crowd wanted to leave.. it was about 4am when we finally got home (with little, or no voice) I think Patti Smith was the opening act for Southside but I'm not real sure!! Great intimate concert with Bruce and Southside."
