Version 50 - Baby doll
Notes:
Bruce's first-ever meeting with Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos, organized by Bruce Springsteen Band manager Carl "Tinker" West and held at Wes Farrel's publishing company in New York, where Appel was employed. In a songwriting room next to Appel's office Bruce performs two songs (both on piano) to an audience of two
(Appel and West). THIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT RECORDED. Appel has stated he was not particularly impressed by either song but did see potential in the lyrics to "Baby Doll". Appel tells Springsteen to get back in touch when he had more material like it. The identity of the other song performed has never been mentioned. This meeting seems to be the catalyst for a huge songwriting burst for Bruce. Soon after Bruce returns from a California holiday in late January he calls Appel and arranges to visit him and perform new material.
